Tandem's Resume Tips - How Many Years Of Experience To List On Your Resume

Kent R.

From the archives - common questions worth re-addressing. Q: My friend, who reviewed my resume, said that I should not show all of my work experience (20+ years) on my resume. Is this true?

A: Most resumes should show 10-15 years of work experience (at most). This is a shock for many people to learn. Not having seen your resume and not knowing the details of your profession and career progression, I can’t say for sure what I’d recommend. Generally speaking, though, I think it is safe to say that this is a good rule to follow.

If you have earlier work experience that you’d like to see captured, that's not a problem. There are effective ways to include those details in your resume without having to break the 10-15 year rule.
