A lot of clients ask me about the availability of alternative work schedules. Last month, I worked with a client, Kate, who was interested in a position that was advertising the availability of just such a schedule. She's raising kids and has a huge load of responsibilities outside of the corporate world. So, she was very interested in the possibility but was wondering how much enthusiasm she should express. I let her know that - at the right time - she would be wise to express a sincere interest in the possibility. Alternative work schedules really are gaining momentum. If it's listed as a benefit that interests you, go for it!
Kate just e-mailed to let me know that she got the job and her dream schedule. As it turns out - based on her expression of interest in a flexible work schedule - the company hired two candidates and made the position a "job share." Both employees are responsible for determining how they can each best work 20 hours. Not a bad deal.
